Tongues for the Post-Modern Saint Part 5

If you believe even 10% of this post, it will revolutionize your prayer life.  I’m not asking you to agree with me 100%, but to just entertain the possibilities in scripture concerning angelic tongues.  You might paint me a heretic, but that’s a risk I’m willing to take.  If you have felt your prayer language was pointless or powerless - you’re about to see the truth that satan prays you’ll never discover.

As a young child growing up in Pentecost, I learned the basic three-fold purpose for speaking in tongues.

  1. My tongue is a personal language of worship that only God knows and understands.
  2. Tongues allow the Spirit of God to pray – through me - His perfect will when I don’t know how to pray.
  3. Praying in tongues strengthens the inner man and builds faith.

How thankful I am for the Holy Spirit education that was given to me at a very early age!  This foundation, however, is begging to be built upon.  We’ve failed to recognize that God uses tongues to direct angels in their assignments.  Paul writes in 1 Corinthians 13:1, “If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal.”  Tongue-talkers across the board seem to have no problem with calling their language “a Heavenly dialect.”  There seems to be division, however, on accepting that they are indeed the tongues of angels.  Before I proceed, let me clarify a few points.

  • We must never worship angels.  Speaking in an angelic tongue is in no-wise insinuating angel-worship.  I’m speaking in your language right now, but I’m not worshipping you, right?
  • We must never pray to angels.  You’ll never find in scripture where a saint prayed to an angel or made his request to anyone but Father God.  Jesus taught in Matthew 6, “When you pray say, ‘Our Father Who art in Heaven…”
  • We must never make angels the center of our focus.  They are not superior to us in creation but rather servants to us.  “Are not all angels ministering spirits sent to serve those who will inherit salvation?” Hebrews 1:14.  Jesus had angelic visitations and interactions but never failed to keep His focus on the Father.  Likewise, we must not be distracted by or pre-occupied with angelic hosts, but be thankful for their God-directed assistance.

A prophetic friend of mine spoke with me just the other day.  We were talking about the glory of God and the angelic hosts Father has assigned to each believer.  He said, “Don’t pray to your angels!  If you do, they’ll leave you!” We chuckled over his quip, but the warning does stand.  To be honest, I’m not sure if it’s proper to command angels.  Psalm 91:11 says, “For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways;”  We may assuredly ask Father for angelic assistance, but asking angels to do specific things for us is right close to prayin’ to ‘em.

Some have drawn authority to command angels from 1 Corinthians 6:3.  Paul explains, “Do you not know that we will judge angels? How much more the things of this life!”  This he speaks of our participation in the final sentencing of the fallen angels.  We will have the pleasure of passing judgment on every demon spirit that has tormented us in this life, hoooraah!  This is clearly not an admonition to begin barking orders out to the Heavenly servants whom Father has so graciously given us.  Having said the former… let’s dive into the fun stuff, shall we?

“If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels…”

The tongues of men refer to the ability to speak another human language not learned through natural means.  This phenomenon took place in Jerusalem on the Day of Pentecost.  Acts 2:4-6 records, “All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them. Now there were staying in Jerusalem God-fearing Jews from every nation under heaven. When they heard this sound, a crowd came together in bewilderment, because each one heard them speaking in his own language.”  Missionaries throughout the ages have reported this same phenomenon in distant lands.  This is a rare and wonderful application of the gift of tongues.  Rare… because, let’s be honest… how often are we in an unknown land or surrounded by foreigners without the ability to communicate?  But it does still happen.  The tongues of men are known and interpretable by mankind.

Angelic tongues cannot be interpreted by human means.  Father God, the author of diverse languages (remember Babel?) has also given the creatures of Heaven their own wonderful languages.  The Inter-Varsity Press Bible Commentary has this to say about 1 Corinthians 13:1:

In some Jewish traditions, angels preferred to speak Hebrew, but most Jewish people would have agreed that angels understood human languages, especially since angels were appointed over various nations.  Paul may believe that there are angelic languages in addition to human ones, in which case he would be saying, “Though I be so fluent in tongues that I could speak every conceivable language…” (Job’s daughters at the end of the *Testament of Job spoke ecstatically in angelic tongues as they were inspired to think heavenly things.)

Source: IVP Bible Background Commentary: New Testament by Craig S. Keener

That tongues could be an angelic language is nothing new in Christendom.  Would God have inspired Paul to use hyperbole in what He knew would be such a polarizing topic?  I doubt it.  If the Word of God is simple enough that even a child could read it and walk away with understanding, we can read 1 Corinthians 13:1 and see the obvious.

If tongues are a Heavenly language, that means the beings of Heaven are fluent in them.  Why is this important?  I’m glad I asked!  Knowing this changes the way we envision prayer.  Allow me to illustrate.  According to Romans 8:26-27, when we don’t know how to pray, the Holy Spirit will search our hearts.  He takes inventory of the concerns of our heart and then formulates a God-inspired prayer that pleads a perfect case before the court of Heaven – on our behalf.  The Spirit Himself intercedes for us, through us, with groans that our human language cannot express.  As the Spirit partners with us to plead our case to Heavenly Father, the angels are listening in.  In those glorious unintelligible groans and syllables, they hear instruction on how to answer our prayers.  That instruction is not coming from us, remember.  It is coming through us from the Spirit of God.  He can move and direct angels, through our tongues, to act on our behalf to resolve the issues of our lives.

In Daniel 10:12-14 we read how an angel was commissioned the moment Daniel began to pray.  “Then he continued, “Do not be afraid, Daniel. Since the first day that you set your mind to gain understanding and to humble yourself before your God, your words were heard, and I have come in response to them. But the prince of the Persian kingdom resisted me twenty-one days. Then Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me, because I was detained there with the king of Persia. Now I have come to explain to you what will happen to your people in the future, for the vision concerns a time yet to come.’  The moment we begin praying according to the Father’s will, angels are sent to deliver.  If the answer is delayed or deterred, it is because of demonic interference.  We must be persistent to press in prayer.  By continuing to pray in tongues, more angels can be directed to do warfare on your behalf.

What if you believed that God heard you every time you prayed?  Could you believe that it is Him praying through you in Heavenly tongues?  If you could see in the invisible eternal realm the angels who are hanging on your every Shatanday cabaskah sheebow-low may! Is it possible they are listening to Father instruct them – through you – on how to deliver breakthrough?  If we believed even a slice of that, prayer would be a joy!

Burn her, burn her at the stake! Surely I jest, as this is one of the most clearly written, concise discussions with relevant explanations and proper warnings for its length that I have read. I would encourage further study to all as this subject is pregnant with power.

For further study to those inclined might i suggest Psa 91, as there is no small significance that this was an area the Satan confronted Jesus with directly. Also, one area that is often overlooked in dealing with the subject of God, angels and us can be seen in Zech 4 as it pertains to dealings in the Spirit realm. Without discussion of that particular angel or the mountain reference (both worthy of extensive study) the line that sticks out is 6) Then he answered and spake unto me, saying, This is the word of the LORD unto Zerubbabel, saying, Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, saith the LORD of hosts. As familiar as this line is and as frequently as it is quoted, the phrase “of hosts” is frequently omitted. This is particularly significant here, as well as in other verses, because the Lord of hosts is speaking of the Lord as His position as Commander in Chief of the angel armies. When we see this phrase used, we see another level of significance as pertaining to battles and warring in the Spirit realm.

I’m glad the mulling of part 5 has been birthed as this could be another level of breakthrough and Spiritual growth for us all. Through this next level of understanding it might just give us more power to “Command ye me and see what I will do”.

Great post…can’t wait for the next!

Perhaps the most significant section of this post for us all to consider is your reference to Psalm 91:11, “For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways”. You mention that you’re not certain if it is proper for us to command angels. We’re so ingrained in doing this that many of your readers, Melissa, will read over this paragraph and not heed it’s warning. How about Hebrews 2:9 – “But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels…” I may be wrong and haven’t fully studied this, but I don’t remember Jesus praying to or commanding God’s angels. (though He exercised full authority over demons (fallen angels).
Jesus understood authority; trusted Father and did not try to pull rank. God sent angels to minister to Jesus when He needed them. Is it possible that pentecostal pride has us attempting to pull rank in the principalities of heaven’s hosts? If so, we are treading dangerous ground.
This is something I will be looking into. We all owe a big thank you for opening our eyes to this.
    THANK YOU.
That’s all the bigger I can get the text… :)

Brandon, you pose some thoughtful comments as you wrestle with this subject and you are headed in the right direction. If I might offer some comment/suggestions to you as you elucidate this topic that may be of help.

I think if we are to remain scriptural in our dealings with angels, we should pray the Father in Jesus name (John 16:23) as He is the commander of the angels (Lord of Hosts) and ultimately Jesus (Matt 28:18). One pitfall that we as Pentecostals sometimes find ourselves in is that of giving the Jesus of the Gospels (M,M,L,J) the power and His current Glorified, Exalted state seated at the right hand of the Father (Christ in His Deity) to his position as we find it while He was on Earth, performing the mission of the Father to bring Him to the Cross and ultimately finishing the work of restoring us to Him. While he did operate in the Holy Ghost, He spoke and did that which He saw the Father do. He was giving the example by which we are to follow.

In your reference to Heb 2:9, But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels for the suffering of death, crowned with glory and honour; that he by the grace of God should taste death for every man. The important part of that is “for the suffering of death…” as the created beings of angels were not subject to death. 1Cor 6 Do you not know that we will judge angels? How much more matters of this life? tells us of our place to come concerning angels in the eternal purposes of God. As we wrestle with the deeper topics, it is sometimes helpful to look at the picture from different angles to see what is our position now and what will be later so as to understand how we are to walk now and how we will walk in that Day. Example: We are to be kings and priests, to walk Holy and sanctified, to be in this world but not of this world, operating in Kingdom dynamics now, until His Kingdom is established on Earth when we will rule and reign with Him in that day. Our dealings with angels should be directed by the Lord, and while they have been given charge over us to keep us, He gives them their charge, not us. Some things seem to be a fine line, or as some would say, splitting hairs, but it speaks to understanding Spiritual authority.

You also mentioned Jesus operating in full authority over demons/fallen angels but we don’t see Him as commanding angels. A few things that may be helpful in this. First, be careful with demons and fallen angels as they are not the same entities. Second, in your example we see Jesus operating in Kingdom Authority. He was not in His Deity as Christ so He had Kingdom authority over the demons and fallen angels as they were not in the Kingdom but of the world, but did not have charge over the angels as they are in the Kingdom and He was not as of yet in His exalted power at the right hand of the Father where He has all power in Heaven and Earth.

These may seem like fine points but I believe may be helpful. Your comment on Pentecostal pride is one that is very astute and worthy of consideration by all.

Will pray as you press press deeper that God will richly Bless your efforts. I welcome your thoughts/questions/ comments on the above.

I feel to expound a little on the Heb 2:9 and 1Cor 6, although it might be slightly tangential. When God made man in His image and placed him in the Garden of Eden, man was in the place of eternal communion with God. Gen2:9 And out of the ground made the LORD God to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food; the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of knowledge of good and evil.

Man was able to eat of any tree of the garden except of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. Might I suggest that the fruit of that tree was not to be consumed, but rather from which to render judgement. the serpent (a fallen angel) spoke to Eve Gen 3:4-5 4And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die:

5For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.

Now, being formed in God’s image and likeness, having eaten of the tree, would leave man in a fallen state, and “as gods”. The Lord foreseeing this, Gen 3:24So he drove out the man; and he placed at the east of the garden of Eden Cherubims, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to keep the way of the tree of life.

Had the Lord not guarded the tree of life and the fallen man eaten of it, man would be the image of God, as gods eternally in a fallen state, and able to render judgement from that place. The Heb 2:9 reference to Jesus being made lower to suffer death, was for the eternal purpose of God, through Jesus and the cross, being able to redeem man back to Himself and restore man to a place where he can journey to and partake of the Tree of Life. In that Day, because of Jesus, God would have us in the proper place to judge the angels.

I know I just scratched the surface, but I hope it is helpful as it is important as to our purposes here and eternally, and as to how we interact with angels properly. you are right on with your concerns, questions and comments regarding angels. Shine on.

Thanks Patrick! I’m in full agreement with your comments and humbly appreciative for your insight.
I think the shocker that we’re in agreement on is that it seems we’re not really in any position to command angels. Some Christians have been doing this for quite a while… it may be at best, fruitless and at worst…?
I’m sure there is plenty of work to be accomplished on the angels “to-do” list, and for us to request angel’s assistance for “a touchdown pass” or “cover the cops eyes as I speed by” is highly immature at best. (I obviously say this jokingly, but we would probably be shocked…) Other more reasonable causes for commanding angels may seem spiritually productive, however, we cannot be so bold to claim knowledge of God’s purposes and sovereign plan.

And what about Jude 1:9 – “But even the archangel Michael, when he was disputing with the devil about the body of Moses, did not dare to bring a slanderous accusation against him, but said, “The Lord rebuke you!”

This leads to another thin line we walk when confronting demons, do we have the authority, or is it Christ in us? We are one spirit with the Holy Spirit; but can we boldly speak to devils saying “I command you…”? Just a thought…
Also, I humbly request your description of the difference between fallen angels and demons?

For me, it seems that the discussion and thought of your reply has led to a place where we begin to get a glimpse of God’s eternal purposes for evil and suffering in the Earth as we know it. Partaking of the forbidden tree opened the door for sin and caused the entire human race to be born in a fallen state, in which we experience good, evil, pleasure, and pain. The knowledge and experience of such circumstances will not be forgotten when we are glorified, perhaps giving us the wisdom and proper perspective from which to judge angels (and rule and reign) some day. This sovereign plan and purpose for suffering helps us to not only receive tough circumstances in life with joy, but helps us to take a “students position” through any trial, knowing that the “sufferings of this present age cannot compare to the glory which will be revealed in us.”

Ok Brandon, I will try to answer some questions. First, I want to preface with this: I am mindful, appreciative, and respectful of the forum Melissa has provided for exploration and openness of thought and comment and do not want to over step boundaries. Having said that, I will try to be definitive and brief. I am not an authority by any means, but am growing and discovering as we all are. Funny thing is, I didn’t know that I stood where I did on commanding angels until I explored that, as I haven’t made it a practice to interact with angels in that manner, but thank Melissa for opening that avenue of discovery.

To answer the question of the difference between fallen angels and demons, in my opinion, moves into an area where we need to be careful of what is actually scriptural and what is commonly held belief regarding definitions. Exploring these areas can be helpful for the scripturally well grounded Christian, but dangerous for those who are not. So we don’t enter into or hold as scriptural ideas from Kabballah, Gnosticism, or ancient Rabbinical texts, we must know, understand and hold to that which is scriptural. Fascinating to study, but outside of the Word.

It can be stated that the widely held view within Christianity is that fallen angels and demons are the same. I guess what I meant by them being different entities is that I see it in this manner. Scripture is not definitively clear regarding the differences and study is required to formulate the attributes of each. Sorta like all squares are quadrilaterals but not all quadrilaterals are squares. My view is that demons are unclean spirits that can enter into a man and possess him where as angels, fallen or Holy cannot (open for correction with scriptural reference). To explore further, we need to get into nephilim and lengthy discussion , but that is not for here as we move too tangential. The exception that I find to angels not being able to enter man can come from Luke 22:3 and John 13:27 where it talks of “Satan entering in”. A couple of things regarding this thought. First, Lucifer is the name of the fallen angel and Satan is a reference by which he is known and also refers to the attributes belonging to the realm of the adversary. In those passages, Strong’s defines Satan in a number of ways, one of which is 4) by his demons he is able to take possession of men and inflict them with diseases. I see the idea of these scriptures in that light rather than the actual being of Lucifer(fallen angel)/Satan entering in. (Aside–diseases–I view one aspect of sin in this light as it is a sickness unto death, still consistent with the idea of these scriptures as the entering in caused action exalting itself above the knowledge of God).

You referenced Jude as Michael dealt with Satan. Angels are messengers and he invoked the authority that he was empowered by. Jude is an interesting text as within it there are references to the Book of Enoch which is Apocrypha to us, fascinating but not canonized.

I believe we have been given the authority by the Holy Spirit/Christ in us to command demons, but because we can doesn’t mean we should as this can be intense warfare if we wield our authority loosely as we can bite off more than we can chew if not properly prepared for confronting/casting out demons directly(Jesus I know, Paul I know but who are you?). The keys to the Kingdom which Jesus gave to Peter (binding/loosing) are very useful.

A quick aside that just came to me regarding the angelic realm and why we sometimes need to dig deeper. We are very familiar with the 1Kings passages regarding Elijah, Jezebel, and the prophets of Baal. After we see the power of God manifest through Elijah, he took flight when 1Kings 19:2 Then Jezebel sent a messenger unto Elijah, saying, So let the gods do to me, and more also, if I make not thy life as the life of one of them by to morrow about this time. So we can have fun and say that he slew all the prophets of Baal but ran from the woman. But it is interesting to note that the word messenger (malak) in that scripture can be translated to mean messenger, angel, or theophanic angel. In light of this, could it be that Elijah was prepared for confronting the prophets but was caught slightly off guard when confronted by a messenger (fallen angel) in a heavenly battle he didn’t see coming. Does not justify his flight or his not confronting it as an extension of the power of God that had just been displayed, but gives a slightly different perspective to this text regarding angelic warfare.

Your “humble request” is appreciated but feels funny as I see myself as being like you in trying to grow and give of what I have. I feel humble that the Lord would use me to give to others that they might benefit, so a simple question is sufficient for me as we are all on the same journey with slightly different courses. I appreciate Melissa’s blog and don’t want too overstep bounds. Any other questions are welcomed as they push me also. I hope this has been helpful.

    Hello everyone!

What I think is most exciting is that when we pray in the Spirit, that the Spirit of God is also bound by Mark 11:22, 23! If that is truly a language (which we know it is) then He to is bound by that! We are having what we say IN THE SPIRIT!!! The more clear and pronounced are language becomes, the more clearer the things of God will be in our life!!

      Furthermore…what is interesting is this…..

In the book of Acts 12: 5-7, we can see that prayer without ceasing and Angels are linked!

Whenever you are between a “rock and a hard place” in life, It is best to pray in the Spirit and NOT consider your circumstances! There is more power and might that we can not explain in those 2 verses.

I know that they were praying in the Spirit because in verse 15 they told that little girl that she was crazy! Why say that if you were praying without ceasing in verse 5? Goes to show us that we need to keep our mouth shut after we pray in the Spirit and not consider what we are really thinking in our minds!

It is obvious that in verse 5, the Spirit of God orchestrated Peters deliverance while the Saints where praying without ceasing for him. While praying in the Spirit, we need to expect the super natural to happen for us and others around us!! Our neighbor hoods, city, county…etc.

I thought I would also share this with you all.

When I was in Iraq in 2008, the Spirit of God began to open my understanding on prayer. For 8-9 months, I had the privilege of praying on average 5-6 house a day..in a combat zone!!

I’ve been a Christian since June 14th, 1984….but never caught a clue until a few years ago!
(took the children of Israel 40 years…I did it in about half that time lol). Anyways, there were things that God was sharing with me at the time, and I couldn’t connect the dots. It wasnt until I saw a TV broadcast by Dr Leroy Thompson (aired in Oct ’08…I saw it Nov ’10) The same things that this Pastor shared…God was telling me the same around that time frame….below is the insight of what the Spirit of God revealed.

Quickest route to the Super Natural…..Praying in the Spirit

1 Realises the evidence of things that are Not Seen!
2 You are having what you Say IN THE SPIRIT…by The Spirit
3 Brings forth and manifest great exaltation
    4 releases a Divine expectation
5 Going into the Spiritual realm will make outside things manifest according to the will of God
6 Experiences in the Spirit you can’t get no other way
7 Praying in the Spirit will put you on the fast track to manifestations
8 Brings you back to the experience you had In the Spirit
9 Edifying yourself/Building up the Supernatural on Supernatural Faith
10 Speaking To God, Spirit to Spirit
11 Cutting new paths in the Supernatural that will affect everything around you
12 Invading the traffic of the Supernatural
13 Removing blind spots in the Spiritual Realm
14 Brings you to the bottom line of trusting in God
15 You magnify the Spiritual Realm
16 It creates a new ability of yieldness/Boldness at its Highest Degree
17 You enter in a Supernatural Rest
