15 Signs of a Religious Spirit

One of the primary purposes of Defining Words is to resource ministries with teaching materials. Feel free to print out and use this post as a handout when teaching on the Religious Spirit. The following “15 Signs of a Religious Spirit” are derived from the Book of Jude, and from Jack Deere’s teaching Exposing the Religious Spirit. This list delineates a spectrum of expressions of the religious mindset. Manifestations of the religious spirit are not limited to Christianity, but can be identified in any false religion as well. Your thoughts and comments are most certainly welcome.

1. RIFT - One with a religious spirit believes he has a mission to tear down error or what he believes is wrong.

2. REBUKE - He has a hard time receiving rebuke from someone less spiritual than he.

3. REBELLIOUS - He will not listen to people, because he can hear from God.

4. REPULSED - He immediately notices what is wrong with people, or the church, rather than looking for what is right.

5. RIGOROUS - He keeps score on his spiritual life and carries guilt when he doesn’t add up to the Lord’s standards.

6. REJECTING - He feels as though he has been appointed to fix everybody else.

7. RIVAL - He may feel as though he is truly closer to God than others, and his life or ministry is more pleasing to God in comparison.

8. RANKS - He takes pride in spiritual discipline or spiritual maturity and ranks himself against others.

9. REPUTATION - He will do things in order to be noticed or affirmed by people.

10. RIGID - Religious spirits are overly repulsed by “emotionalism.”

11.  RAUCOUS - Seemingly converse to the prior, a religious spirit will use emotionalism or hype to manipulate people.

12. RESISTANT - He will tend to resist the supernatural or reject spiritual manifestations he cannot understand.

13. REACTIONARY – He will overreact to carnality or immaturity in the body of Christ.

14. RENEGADE - He will not fully commit to a church or lend a hand to help if the group is not “perfect” in their theology.

15. REFRAIN - He will tend to be suspicious of or even oppose new moves of God.

Seeing Is A Choice

intense eyes

One of the blinding mindsets prophetic people must overcome is the myth that, “If God wants me to see it or know it, He’ll reveal it to me.”  While this is absolutely true, it has become mythical in its application.  Father doesn’t always shake the ground under our feet or enrapture us in an open vision to bring us revelation.  As Elijah discovered in 1 Kings 19, He often speaks in the still small voice.  There is another truth equally important.  Listeners hear more and seers see more.  There are things God is revealing that we miss because we have our eyes closed.  Prophetic people are listeners, lookers and observers of the signs and seasons that are ever-unfolding.  The purpose of this post is to open your eyes to the fact that Father is speaking, is revealing, and is looking to see who’s looking.

1. If God didn’t want you to see, He wouldn’t have given you eyes!  Proverbs 20:12 tells us, The hearing ear, and the seeing eye, the LORD hath made even both of them.”  In the natural sense, eyes and ears give us the ability to navigate the earth.  Without one or both of those senses, navigation becomes challenging.  Father gives us spiritual senses to navigate spiritually as well.  His desire is that we both see and hear spiritual things… every day.  A religious spirit will try to convince you that seeing or hearing supernaturally is something you shouldn’t pursue for a variety of reasons.  (a) Only fruity Christians seek vision or direct revelation from God. (b) You might stumble into error. (c) You’re proud for thinking God would speak to you!  (d) Everything God wants you to know is already written in the Bible.  My answer to all the above? Balderdash!   Jesus even said in Matthew 4:4, ’Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word (rhema:that which is or has been uttered by the living voice, ) that comes (ekporyüomī: flows like a river) from the mouth of God.”  It is possible to speak directly with the author of the book.  We do not live on the natural alone, but the supernatural that comes from Father.

2. You choose blindness or sight.  Fifteen times in scripture, Jesus said, “He who has an ear, let him hear…”  Jesus was saying, “You’ve been given the mechanism for seeing and hearing… now use it to grasp the revelation I’m about to share!”  Let’s get something straight… seeing is not for a few, nor is it an anomaly.  We live in such dark days that seeing is exceptional rather than the common rule.  Do not let the darkness of our times cajole you into believing that spiritual blindness is acceptable.   God gave you permission to see when He gave you eyes, so open them!

3. We don’t get revelation because we can see.  We see because there is revelation!  God is “The Revelator”.  He is revelatory in nature, always showing creation some afore-to hidden attribute of His ever-increasing glory.  Whoa!  The fact that He created us with eyes illustrates His intent to fill our eyes with His glory.  Why should you feel guilty for wanting to see it… to see Him? What else is there to see???

4. Father wants you to press into seeing.  If you’re not seeing, right now, press in to see.  Did you know that your eyes function in a dark room just as they do in a lit room?  A matter of fact, your eyes will open wider to try and capture any available glow of light.  This is true of the prophetic as well.  In seasons of “darkness” the eyes must open wider to navigate and be prepared for the impending illumination of His “now word.”  Now is not the time to sit idly by or sleep the night through.  Open your eyes wide.  In closing, Psalm 119:5 says, “Thy word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path.”  Word in that verse is the Hebrew word dabar which means active speaking.  It is constant conversation with Father that brings vision to the eyes.
